Microwaves began as something of a novelty decades ago. They were fast and convenient. An ideal solution for a busy person who wanted to make food quick. Microwave popcorn quickly became a popular snack. Today most young people don’t know what it was like to prepare food without the option of using a microwave. Even many restaurants use them.
Where microwaves are in use there is always a need to keep them properly clean. We all know how gross a dirty microwave can be. In this article, we will look at how to clean one part of your microwave- the grease filter.
Why take the time to clean a microwave filter?
The first question you may be asking is why you should bother cleaning your microwave filter. The reason why microwaves are equipped with grease filters is to protect the microwave’s exhaust fan from getting clogged with grease.
This is a problem for over-the-stove microwaves, where grease from the stove flies up to the bottom of the microwave during stovetop cooking. Most manufacturers recommend cleaning the filter monthly. Like all regular cleaning, it is easier if you don’t avoid it for too long.

Check to determine what your microwave filter is made of
Find out what your grease filter is made of. Stainless steel microwave grease filter can be put in the dishwasher or hand washed. Aluminum grease filters must be hand washed.
Safety first
Whenever doing any kind of deep cleaning of an appliance you should always first unplug it.
Remove the microwave grease filter
The exact placement of the grease filter may vary a little depending on the make and model of your microwave, however, it should be located on the bottom of the microwave. You should look for a sliding device that holds the grease filter in place. It might take a bit of maneuvering to get it loose. It is also a good idea to wear rubber gloves because of the grease.
Boil some water
If you intend to put your grease filter in the dishwasher you should be able to rinse it and place it there. If you are going to handwash your grease filter, you will need to boil water in a pan that is large enough to fit the filter. Add half a cup of baking soda and a few teaspoons of dish detergent. Again, heat-resistant gloves are a good idea because the filter will be hot from the water.
Clean the Grease Filter.
Place the grease filter in the water and let it soak. You can immerse one-half of it in the water at a time if need be. You will be able to see the grease dissolve. To help things along you can add more baking soda to the water, one teaspoon at a time. Let it soak for 15 to 30 minutes, depending on how long it takes to remove the grease.
A toothbrush or small scrub brush can be used to clean up any dirty patches where grease remains. Rinse and dry the grease filter thoroughly before returning it to its place.
